This is exactly what I wanted. After shopping biometric/electronic safes vs mechanical locks my choice was clear. The Top Draw-Quick Access uses a Simplex lock which I am familiar with because I have already have a Simplex safe I have been using for over 20 years. The Simplex lock works on a combo of buttons that are pushed and followed with the turn of a knob. No batteries to worry about. The combo is really easy to set. I bought the optional security cable to attach it to my bed frame. Plus I can use the cable to secure the case in my car. This box is strong and heavy- about 10 lbs. This case will definitely secure your guns from children and curious adults.

Purchased a Compact Model 279-S CC DOJ approved compact security case. Only 5lbs and easy to use. No batteries to fail or keys to fumble in the dark. Keeps my pistol secure in a small out of sight space (less than 10x8x2 inches) in by vehicle when I go to a place where carrying concealed is prohibited. Easy to program a personal code to open the heavy steel container. Fully padded to protect its contents and has a couple of holes in the bottom to secure it to a fixed object with a cable if you like. I would buy it again if I ever need a 2nd one. A true “strongbox” of days gone by.

Trying to be a responsible gun owner, I found myself in need of a place to safely store a newly gifted handgun. I did a lot of research and came to the conclusion that a high quality safe for one full-size handgun with easy access would serve me well and the V-Line Tactical Top Draw Handgun safe with simplex lock certainly fit the bill. This unit is solid and is easy to hide away in my closet, probably bolted to the floor. In addition, I also purchased the Quick Release bracket so I can take the safe with me on the road or to the range. I thought the price was very reasonable as well. Now, the only reason I did not give it a 5 star rating is probably more on me than on the product: For some reason, once I changed the default entry code, it would take on average 5 attempts to open the case. Then, trying to set a new combination, I had no luck. That ‘L’ tab would not budge. Tonight, however, I went through all the instructions again and I easily reset the combination and it opens without fail on every attempt! My new handgun fits nicely and everything is in its place. Tomorrow, I bolt the sucker to the floor. I like this product! One last thing: I was very impressed with the packaging the safe came in. Thick, sturdy, cardboard without a lot of crap stuffing. The contents arrived in perfect condition (and I plan to use the box again…it’s that good).

This handgun safe is awesome, it feels very high quality and has extremely quick access with the simplex lock. The only thing I wish it had is a small handle or lip to grab onto when opening and closing – that would make it easier to operate while it’s in a drawer, as you have to grab the bottom of the lid to open it. Other than that, this thing is as solid as I could have hoped for!

Loved my VLine top drawer safe, which I bought as a dorm safe for my middle son, that I bought the same safe for my youngest son when he went to college. I bought a separate bicycle/gun lock (10 foot) and looped it through the holes in the safe, attaching it securely to his bedframe. It’s the perfect size, the combination was a piece of cake to change out (after watching the YouTube video), and it’s made in the USA! Great safe, with a few quibbles…
Overall, it’s an excellent safe. I do wish V Line had included a small, automatic light. I was able to find and purchase one. It uses a combination light sensor/motion sensor, so it won’t come on in bright daylight, but I do wish V Line had simply included it, considering the cost of this safe.
Only other quibble, I wish it had a hydraulic lift. The safe lid is heavy and opens 180 degrees, and if you’re not careful, it will slam open directly on the lock. It’s a very solid, well build safe without electronics to fail, but somewhat heavy to open.
I’ll still give this safe five stars… all the minor flaws, I was aware of prior to my purchase.

We have a 3.5 year old at home that is very smart so needed something to keep the Glock locked up from him. I did a lot of research into different lock types, especially electronic vs simplex lock. Would suggest you do the same (many cheap electronic locks are easily broken into and some even susceptible to opening just by being bumped). I didn’t care so much for something 100% pry proof or anything, just to keep the kid out, and this is it. Very nice finish with the vline logo. It does not scream “cheap”. Overall very happy. I bought it from Amazon and tried to post a review but it’s stuck in approval limbo, maybe because I used the work “gun” or “Glock”.

I have a 15+ year old Tactical Top Draw-Quick Access Handgun Safe with Simplex Lock that I hadn’t used in 10 years . I fastened it under my car seat to secure my pistol when I couldn’t carry it. After 5 years I traded cars and the new car didn’t have enough space under the seat for the safe. I put It away for over 10 years and forgot about it. We just move and I found it again but I couldn’t remember the combination. I called V-line and Bruce who were very helpful and now it’s as good as new l. I’ve purchased two V-line simplex lock safes for my pistols. I’ve got children in my home and it’s important to have something easy to access during an emergency but hard to get to by children. This does it all. The combination can be accessed even in the dark without malfunction and it’s hard to figure out the combination. Very good safe.

Overall this is great handgun safe and the mechanical lock is very easy to operate. I didn’t rate this a five because I feel it should have a hydraulic closer to help open the case. I purchased this as a quick access safe and it will be in my nightstand drawer and having to open manually makes if very awkward to use. Also you need to have it fastened down if you are going to use one hand to open it. One thing to keep in mind the when putting the gun in the case – I have a Glock 19 and if you don’t put it in correctly the lock will be pressed against the gun. This is small case so I’m ok with this restriction.
